Navigating businesses to new opportunities – Liverpool City Region Freeport

Freeports are special areas within the UK’s borders where different economic regulations apply, such as tax benefits and customs incentives on specific sites. Freeports grow the local economy and are hubs for global trade and investment.

The Liverpool City Region (LCR) hosts the top transatlantic port in the UK, handling 45% of the UK’s trade from the United States and is an ideal Freeport location. The LCR Freeport spans 300 hectares with multiple gateways and modes of transport. Situated in logistics and manufacturing hubs, the Freeport sites, including rail terminals and the Port of Liverpool’s container terminal, will generate approximately 675,000 sqm of commercial space.

The Freeport will focus on boosting advanced manufacturing, pharmaceuticals and green energy, meeting the region’s target to be net zero carbon by 2040 at the latest. It will aim to add £850 million to the local economy, create 14,000 jobs and contribute towards plans to boost research and development, particularly in green technologies.
