The UK Government is investing over £2.6 billion in Levelling Up projects for local people and businesses across the North West.

Zoning in on growth – Investment Zones in Liverpool and Manchester

Investment Zones in Manchester and Liverpool City Region are receiving £1.4 billion of private investment. These zones are due to become knowledge-intensive growth clusters for life sciences in Liverpool, and manufacturing in Manchester, benefiting from special tax and regulatory rules, granted by the UK Government.

Opening more doors for more businesses – Liverpool City Region Freeport

Freeports are special areas within the UK’s borders where different economic regulations apply, such as tax and customs relief on specific sites. Liverpool City Region Freeport is a fantastic place for businesses to grow. It will create 14,000 jobs, with a focus on advanced manufacturing, pharmaceuticals and green energy pushing the region towards its target of net zero by 2040. The freeport will be in three specific sites: St Helens, Widnes and Wirral Waters.

Keeping businesses moving – Energy Coast Resilient Routes in Cumbria

Businesses in the North West rely heavily on the roads, and Cumbria will receive £17.8 million from the UK Government Levelling Up Fund to upgrade 30km of the network including the A5086 between Cockermouth and Egremont, A595 south of Sellafield and A590 through Barrow-in-Furness. The upgrade will help to improve vital routes for businesses and link communities, jobs and services across Cumbria and the North West.

Twenty towns in the North West have received Government funding, including Workington, Oldham, Blackpool and Nelson. The money is helping to finance projects such as the flexible workspace project in Oldham, which will support the digital, academic and creative sectors of the local and regional economy, as well as the Digital Accelerator Hub at Lakes College, which trains people in the tech skills that businesses need.
